RE: follow-up question-garmin update mapping

I think your choice for buying new is a wise one. There are several things that will come into play
Likely, a newer unit will have an improved chipset in it which is the “Brain” of the device. It is much like the CPU in a newer computer. There are now several units that offer the SiRF chipset. This chipset is highly touted for satellite acquisition speed and accuracy of triangulation as well as sensitivity to receive satellite signals in an unclear overhead view of the sky.
Newer arrays of more user friendly features are now more common with a new unit. You no longer need the understanding of “waypoints” or data entry specifics as you once did with an older unit.
As far as “maps” are concerned, the minute a map is released it is antiquated to a point. New roads may not be included in the latest release. Most of the major manufacturers do offer free upgrades for a newly purchase unit. So even if the unit sat on a vendors shelf for a period of time, the latest version of the basemap is often available from the Manufacturer’s website for download. Both Garmin and Magellan use a company called NavTeq which is a US based cartography company which provides the map data. Tom-Tom on the other hand uses a European based company for it’s maps. Although I am sure a Tom-Tom works quite well in the US, I would tend to trust a NavTeq based map to be maybe a little more accurate
I would pick a list of candidates for consideration based on the features you may want and then look at the chipset and the basemap provider. You can read reviews on most of the units available today by “google’ing the manufacture and model number
Questioning current users of a particular model can be best asked if they would buy a different model if given the choice and why

RE: The U.S. is now a safer place

I wish you would have come a little farther north...I just picked up a 2.5" yellow splat in the Adirondacks that would make good roofing sealant.
Yea, No Kidding
My DW suggested we contact a chemist friend for some on-sight research. We think we could give 3M or DuPont some market-share worries with a new and improved adhesive.
Get a few dryer sheets soppin' wet and wipe 'em right off. Don't forget to rinse well.
Thanks for the tip My arms are sore from scrubbing
No more bugs when you do this
I have considered this mod but not sure it would any effect for the front of Truck or Bunk Wall of the camper
I'm thinking plastic wrap that you peel-off like the race car guys use on the windshields

The U.S. is now a safer place

Bug wise, that is
Having just returned from a round trip across the United States, I can safely say there are indeed less bugs that you will have to contend with.
I took out a significant number of the little (And big) critters with the front of my Dodge and the leading edge of my Lance.
I am amazed at the attack strategy these unfortunates use. There are high lever bombers based on their demised location being located on the upper reaches of the camper. Also there are strike-attack species that obviously took the Kamikaze approach at my windshield. Some of these were also low-level types heading for the grill area. The individual colors are also intriguing, from black to brown and yellow to green. Big to mini splats everywhere. I’m glad I have a dually for my 835 as I was getting worried with the additional weight incurred based on the quantity of the victims.
So if you happen to travel on I-80 or I-70 coast to coast and you say “Hey Honey, There aren’t many bugs here”, you can thank Deaver the bug killer for passing through before you.
I just hope that I didn’t louse up the food chain which will change everything for years to come
Now back to cleaning the mess

Pennsylvania to Lake Tahoe, CA and back

We are in the final planning steps for a trip to the Lake Tahoe area of California from Philadelphia, PA. We are going to the Rubicon Trail and then onto the Dusy- Ershim Trail in the Dinkey Lakes Wilderness area for a Jeep Event. We will be carrying our Lance 835 Truck Camper on Our Dodge Dually and towing our Jeep on a Car Hauler.
Our planning shows the most direct route using Route I-80 across the country, I received travel planners from all of the State Tourism departments for the states that we will be passing through. We will return using Routes I-40 and I- 70
Although we will be focused on getting to our initial destination (Lake Tahoe), I would be most applicative if you would offer “must see’s” and routes or areas to avoid (Traffic delays, etc) for this journey.
We have been to California before by air but have never been farther west than Ohio by Land.
We can’t wait and look forward to your thoughts and suggestions.

RE: LANCE ELECTRICAL

So am I correct in understanding your "charge" line on your GN harness goes unused? You run a separate 8 AWG for that to charge your TC battery?
The Charge line is live in the GN Harness because it is connected (tapped into) the Trucks Wiring Harness at the bumper or hitch location. I do not have it tied to the Lance socket wiring as I do the other wires. I ran the Charge line from the Lance Harness direct to a fused connection to the Battery
I can use the GN harness as it was intended should I ever tow a GN or a fifth wheel Trailer
And as for the battery isolator, cool beans. I think both my Lance, AND my 03' F250 have one from stuff I've read...
So what if I just use the GN harness? My battery on the TC won't charge?
Thanks for bearing with me!
The Lance wiring calls for an 8 AWG Charge line. Will your Camper Battery be charged? I think to some degree but you will be taxing the GN Harness and your Truck wiring. I would not rely on it and would be concerned from a safety view also. If you buy the GN Harness and plan on using it alone, Look into upgrading the wire size for the Charge size. You may be able to take the connector apart and up-size the wire to accomplish this
Wiring Gauges are NOT something you should skip on. The wrong size can get overheated (Resistance) and become brittle and fail or worse, cause a fire

RE: LANCE ELECTRICAL

Thanks for the tip.... a few questions just to confirm:
1) The gooseneck harness you use allows the plug at the hitch to be open to be used for a trailer (we plan on towing one behind our TC)?
Sorry, I should have been a little clearer. The GN harness actually plugs into the existing Truck wiring "behind" the bumper 7-pin connector (Socket). You disconnect the truck harness from the back of the 7-pin socket. Then plug in the GN Harness and then plug back into the bumper 7-pin socket. This allows you to continue to use the bumper trailer connector. The other end of the GN Harness you then mount into the bed wall of the truck and it also has a 7-pin connector (Socket. The net result is you will end up with two 7-pin sockets. One in the original location (Bumper) and the other mounted in the bed itself. We also pull a Trailer with our Camper on-board
2) And since I already have a pigtail adapter plug that converts the lance plug into a standard 7 pin, any suggestions on how I can bypass the 12v wire in the gooseneck harness and tap into my battery directly? I'm assuming I'd want a battery isolator too?
I am not sure you can replace the "Charge" line on the the GN harness with an 8 AWG wire with out looking at the harness itself. I am not sure I can help you on that one. There is an isolator already on board in the Lance
Thanks, I am slowly but surely figuring this stuff out!
You are Welcome. We were all here at some point too
The advantage of the lance plug is that it can take a bigger wire for the ground and battery wire than a regular 7 pin. But as you note, if you use the lance plug, you can't use the in bed connector to hook up to a goose neck or 5th wheel trailer.
I am not sure if this was aimed at me
I have two connectors in my Bed mounted just below the Stake pocket on the left front. The first is the Lance socket and the second is the GN socket which is a standard 7-pin. The Connectors are mounted one above the other and are tied together except for the "charge" line for the Lance wiring. I use whichever socket for the task at hand

RE: LANCE ELECTRICAL

Welcome to the Truck Camper World
Lance uses a “unique” shaped 6-Pin plug and receptacle harness on their campers. These harnesses are available from a Lance Dealer or on-line
On-line Vendor
The Truck side harness is intended to be mounted in the bed of the truck. The wires of this harness include wires to be connected to the running lights, stop-turn lights, etc and an 8 Awg wire to be connected to the Truck Battery. This 8 Awg wire (White) is obviously larger then the rest when you look at the harness. This white wire is used to charge the camper on-board battery when connected. There is a wiring diagram that should be included with the harness when purchased
As far as your previous owner’s suggestion, I take his advice 2 ways
First, The standard 7-pin factory truck wiring will not support the Battery charge circuit as the wire gauge is too small.
Second, many owners have indeed changed out the unique Lance plug/socket configuration in favor of the “standard” 7-Pin harness. Keep in mind that you will have to match connection to connection for change.
Here’s what I did.
I purchased the Lance harness and a Gooseneck Wiring Harness like this one
http://www.etrailer.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/va/v30133.jpg
More Info
The Goosneck harness plugs into the existing truck trailer wiring harness at the rear of the truck. I then mounted both Harness connectors in the bed. I tied (tapped) the Lance harness into the (Connector end) of the Gooseneck harness following the lance diagram, with the exception of the 8 Awg wire mentioned previously. The 8 Awg wire was run up to the engine Compartment of the truck and fuse connected to the Battery.
Although my approach is a more expensive install, I feel I have solid connections and can plug any Lance (Should I receive a large lottery wining) or anything into one or the other connectors as I need.
Here is another thread on the subject
And another

RE: garmin 276C problem

First, I would update the resident software to Version 5.20 using Garmin's Install WebUpdater
Garmin's Web Updater
I had a similar problem with my 276C. I first called Tech Support and was on hold forever. I then EMailed them and was given a solution which worked for me.
Follows are the EMail contents
Subject: Acquiring Satellites
Message Body: When connected to either the (Included) portable Antenna or a remote BNC Antenna, my unit is unable to acquire satellite reception. Only "Bar" 51 is illuminated. Both Antennas have a clear view of the sky. Is an RMA in order?
Product: GPSMAP 276C
Type: General unit operation
SoftwareVersion: 5.20
Response;
Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I will be happy to with this. What needs to be done is what is called an Auto Locate. the way that this done is with the unit powered off, press and hold the ZOOM OUT button and while holding that, press and hold the power button until the unit powers on to the I Agree screen where you have to press enter to continue. Let up on the 2 buttons and press the ENTER button and let the unit set by a big picture window or outside for 45 minutes to an hour. That should remedy your issue.
I would give this a try

RE: TV Connection Help - Lance 835

I personally would really enjoy a write up of satellite-to-receiver-to-TV hook up and especially the way to quickly (relatively speaking) aim the satellite.
Last fall I installed a 19" HD flat panel TV (with considerable help from Harry BB) and never got the satellite portion working. We watched DVD's which was nice, but I'd like to utilize the television capabilities.
I am not currently trying to deal with the satellite portion just yet. I am taking baby steps but planning on future expansion of capabilities
Which Model Antenna are you using?
readytow
The "Winegard" plate does indeed have two empty connections in my case. The first is for a CG Cable connection and the second is in effect a second connection or splitter so to say
I am having trouble adding a TV in the first place (Keeping DW happy)
I surely don't need a second one. Our Bed room is for sleeping and other things :) TV is not one of them

RE: TV Connection Help - Lance 835

Folks,
Many Thanks for your replies
I think sch911 nailed it. I found a PDF file buried in Winegard's site that made reference to a second "F" connector for the Satellite side of the antenna. Why didn't Winegard include it on the original Wall plate, I am not sure.
fredderf
The second wall plate connector does have a Coax line attached to it. Again, I think sch911 identified it.
Sportsman Matt
I did indeed scour the exterior and all compartments looking for an elusive "F" connector to no avail. When I removed the Winegard wall plate, I noticed an empty connector on the back side of the plate. Looking at the PDF file on Winegard's site, it made mention of a CG cable hookup going into the backside of the Winegard Plate where the empty connection is on mine.
jsmmv
Your manual is a little clearer than my 2004 vintage - Thanks
petekerwien
Thanks.. I am considering a similar approach
I think I now have this figured out and Maybe I will do a write-up and post on my install Maybe it could help others.....
TV's ???? this is camping right?
Many Thanks again

TV Connection Help - Lance 835

We are almost ready to break-in to the 90’s and we are getting soft(er)
We have a 2004 Lance 835. We just got a free 19” Viewsonic HD-LCD TV for switching internet providers at home. We thought the 835 would be the perfect home for the new TV.
Our Lance has the Winegard Combo Satellite-Over Air Antenna already mounted on the roof. On the forward panel (Facing the bed) of galley cabinets, there are two “wall” plates. The first has an “F” connector along with the amplifier switch and a 12V Lighter socket. It is marked with the Winegard logo. The second has just an “F” connector with no other markings. I tested the LCD with the first Plate and am able to receive local broadcast signals. When connected to the second “plain” plate I do not receive anything.
At first I thought the second plate was for GC Cable hook-up but I cannot find any external connector. In reviewing the manuals there is no specific mention of “F” connector connections. The coax attached to the second plate also appears to go the roof area although unconfirmed..
Can anyone shed some light on what the second “F” connector is for or where it actually goes?

RE: New Lance Model - 971

I can't compare my Dodge 3500 dually to other brands in the one ton compartment, but having a 992 on it, I tend to agree with your assessment. I'm struggling right now to do everything I can to reduce the amount of sway I'm getting and it's not exactly fun. Much more money than I suspected I would spend getting the rig outfitted to haul a camper.
I'm currently researching full air ride suspensions or building my own.
